Enjoy hayrides, games, treats, and spooky barnyard fun for all ages—every ticket supports the care of Lovelane’s amazing therapy horses!
Lovelane’s therapeutic riding lessons are 30-minute private sessions focused on achieving wide-ranging therapeutic goals that align with our riders’ ever‐changing needs and development.
Our therapeutic riding program serves students ages 2-20.
Prospective participants can reach out to Jennie Cooke to join the waitlist.
Our goal is to utilize the horse and this unique, motivating setting to make a significant impact on each child’s life beyond the riding ring.
Through this 1:1 interaction and collaboration with a student’s family, therapists, and other professionals, instructors personalize their lessons to support the therapeutic goals of each student.
We strive to create strong student-instructor pairings that leverage instructors’ areas of expertise to best motivate and serve our students.
Lovelane is open 7 days a week and holds lessons on weekday afternoons and weekend mornings.
Lovelane offers all one-on-one lessons which allows us to develop a personalized plan for each student. We have instructors with a wide variety of expertise, including therapists; however, Lovelane does not offer therapy services or hippotherapy.

Other Programs
Lovelane Special Needs Horseback Riding Program is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and relies on fundraising and volunteers to carry out our programs. As of July 1, 2025, the actual unsubsidized cost of a lesson is $155. Some people choose to pay this amount and if it is possible, it is greatly appreciated. Through the generosity of our donors, Lovelane is able to provide a standard subsidized rate of $118 to make our program more accessible. Many riders receive additional tuition assistance to further subsidize the rate by completing a Request for Tuition Assistance form. These forms are reviewed by our Tuition Assistance Committee and the funds available are divided up and awarded based on need. For all new students, there is a one-time $50 enrollment fee that helps cover administrative costs.
Lovelane does not bill insurance companies. Depending on your insurance company, you may be able to apply for reimbursement. Lovelane can provide a receipt for therapeutic riding lessons but cannot provide a procedure code or provider/NPI number.
The length of time a student is on the wait list depends on the student’s availability. The wait time for weekend and afterschool lessons is longer than for weekday lessons in the 10:00 am to 2:30 pm window. Once a lesson time is available, we will set up a tour or initial assessment to get to know your child better. New riders begin with a 4-week trial session of lessons. Many students start in our unmounted programs to get involved and become familiar with Lovelane’s horses before they start riding with us.
Students are required to purchase and wear their own ASTM/SEI-certified equestrian helmet. Bike, ski, and other helmets are not permitted. Students should wear long pants that are comfortable to move in, and close-toed shoes (no sandals or Crocs).
Lovelane’s instructors all hold their Massachusetts Riding Instructor License, are skilled, experienced, and highly dedicated to their craft. Because of the special needs of our student population, many of our instructors are certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) and/or are therapists. Our instructors know the diagnosis and case history of each of their students and are open to collaboration with the student’s other therapeutic providers. When coming off the Wait List, your child will be assigned an instructor based on availability.
Lovelane’s therapy horses are the cornerstone of our program. The outstanding and irreplaceable service they provide reaches approximately 100 students each week. We have many different types of horses, in all shapes and sizes, to meet the needs of our diverse student population. It takes a very special animal to do the job of a therapy horse, and we take great care in selecting and training the horses used in our program. Before a new horse joins Lovelane’s program, they are evaluated during a trial period. The temperament of the horse is one of the most important characteristics we look at, as we are committed to providing our riders with a safe and quiet ride. The horse’s quality of movement and soundness are also critical to their performance in the program. Students generally do not ride the same horse each week.
Volunteers are integral to the program design at Lovelane. Several volunteers are usually needed for each riding session to help with the horse and to ensure the safety of the riders. Currently, about 100 volunteers each week assist during lessons and to maintain the operation of the barn and facility. Lovelane’s volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds including skilled equestrians, professionals, teachers, students, retirees, and stay at home parents. Several of our volunteers have experience working with special needs children and/or are physical, occupational, or speech therapists. Volunteers receive on-the-job training to help them to perform their duties safely and effectively.
Yes, a weight limit ensures the safety of Lovelane’s lessons. Generally, students with a PASSIVE WEIGHT less than 130 lbs or ACTIVE WEIGHT less than 170 lbs are permitted to ride. Throughout the year, Lovelane staff continually assesses each rider to determine safety and appropriateness for the program. Any rider requiring a full transfer assist and/or major trunk support to sit on the horse must weigh less than 100 lbs and/or be approved for safety by the Lovelane staff.
Lovelane serves approximately 150 students in our mounted, unmounted, and partnership programs. Each week, we hold about 100 therapeutic lessons. Our students are ages 2 and up, from 36 Greater Boston communities. We serve students with a wide variety of disabilities and our students’ diagnoses include (but are not limited to): ADHD, anxiety, Autism spectrum disorder, cancer, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, Down syndrome, epilepsy, genetic disorders, hearing and vision impairments, hypotonia, learning disabilities, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, seizure disorders, and sensory integration disorders.
Lovelane is PEDIATRIC FACILITY, serving children from age 2-20.
