Our Horses

Lovelane’s Welfare Policy

At Lovelane, our horses are our primary therapeutic partners!

We are committed to providing them with everything they need to stay healthy, sound, and happy. As a member center of PATH, International, we follow the Five Domains Model of animal welfare, assuring/assessing the well-being of each of our horses in each of the five domains, which include nutrition, physical environment, health, behavioral interactions, and overall mental state.

As part of that commitment, we provide:

  • Access to adequate appropriate nutrition and clean water, which is available at all times
  • A safe environment in a well-ventilated barn with well-maintained stalls, which are cleaned thoroughly every morning and picked clean throughout each afternoon
  • Appropriate work, keeping in mind that therapeutic riding can be mentally and physically taxing for our horses, with a commitment to no more than 2-3 30-minute lessons per day and at least one day off per week
  • Appropriate time off and turn out (at least 5 hours per day) in well-maintained, safe, structurally sound, properly fenced paddocks with adequate hay and clean water available at all times and access to shelter when outside
  • Regular exercise and conditioning to maintain physical and mental health with horses ridden by staff and appropriate volunteers, and access to outdoor ring and extensive trail system
  • Regularly scheduled removal of manure pile and regularly scheduled pest control
  • Regularly scheduled care by our equine veterinarian who provides exams, vaccines, and parasite control, as well as timely care for any injuries incurred
  • Regularly scheduled care by our equine dentist
  • Regular hoof trimming and shoeing by our farrier
  • Regular care by our equine chiropractor and equine reiki healer
  • Well-maintained tack to fit each horse

Donate a Horse

The work of a therapeutic horse is both mentally and physically challenging. It takes a very special horse to do this important job and to help ensure the safety of our Lovelane riders.
