A great day…for a great cause!
The 2010 Susan McDaniel Run for Lovelane
A crowd of nearly 300 showed up to support Lovelane at our annual Susan McDaniel Run for Lovelane on Sunday, June 13th. The Weston Town green was abuzz with excitement even though the sun was not willing to put in an appearance. The light mist made for a great running temperature and it soon cleared up and the event turned into a party on the green. 10-15 little ones ran across the green in the diaper dash and were rewarded with a balloon and a toy. At 11:30 over 50 kids lined up on Town House Road for the start of the ½ mile run around the green. Top honors went to Cameron M., Tim H. and Tomas S. in the boys division and Becca G., Devan L. and Eva W. in the girls division.
A few minutes before noon, Lovelane founder, Debby Sabin welcomed the crowd and acknowledged the generous support of Kevin Youkilis Hits for Kids. She introduced Jim McDaniel, father of Susan for whom the race is named. Jim spoke about Susan, who lost her battle with cancer a number of years ago but who loved her time riding at Lovelane. Her spirit lives on in the wonderful event. Finally at noon, Enza Sambataro Youkilis dialed her husband. Kevin’s voice was loud and clear over the microphone as he thanked everyone for coming and wished the runners luck. The crowd cheered for Kevin as they lined up for the race and were off!
A mere 15 minutes and 28 seconds later, Andrew Gardiner of Wellesley crossed the finish line as the men’s overall winner and at 19 minutes and 58 seconds, Susan Macleod became the women’s overall winners.
After the race Enza Youkilis presented the ‘big check’ for $25,000 from Hits for Kids. Debby Sabin and Susan McDaniel’s parents, Jim and Margaret accepted the check for Lovelane. Seven-time U.S.A. Triathlon Elite National Champion, Karen Smyers took the stage to award the top prizes in each division.
Chef Geoff Janowski of Blue Ribbon Barbeque had a popular tent at the race. Blue Ribbon is an ongoing and generous friend and supporter of Lovelane. Come to our Hoedown on October 2nd to sample some of their award winning barbeque! Representatives from Saucony and Marathon Sports also set up tents and handed out coupons to all comers. Jim Furdon of Brookside Entertainment Systems kept the mood festive with his music and announcements. The face painting tent was well attended and our youngest audience members were held rapt by Silly Willy the clown. It was a great day for a great cause! Thanks to all our sponsors and supporters for make it happen.
