Run Story Continued…..
Every year this event draws a bigger crowd of participants. Raising over $70,000 for the program, a record number of (over 500) people registered to participate in a race on June 9th. Roughly 100 kids took off at top speed to run the ½ mile Fun Run. Top honors in the ½ mile went to Brandon Barbosa, Patrick Fleming, Nicky Perez in the boy’s category and Caroline Fleming, Lauren Young and Megan Flack were the top three finishers among the girls. All six of those speedsters went home with medals and amazon.com gift certificates.
Runners took off for the main event at noon and less than sixteen minutes later the first finishers crossed the line. Matt Herzig was the overall finisher with an impressive time of 15:56, followed quickly by David Freeman at 16:59 and Eli Curme at 17:04. In the overall women’s category former Lovelane instructor and speech therapist Kristin Chisum took the top prize finishing in 19:32 followed by Kathy Fleming at 19:46 and Jane Chitkara at 21:05.
Thanks to Saucony, Marathon Sports, Fast Splits, Pure Barre and landmark Cinemas, the top three finishers in all age categories went home with some terrific prizes. Each winner also received a free one week trial at Boston Sports Club.
After the race, runners were treated to massages from Joint Ventures Physical Therapy and some great music by the young performers from the Real School of music. There was plenty of food for both runners and cheer leaders. Cabot Cheese and Stonyfield yogurt donated an impressive quantity of cheese and organic yogurts and smoothies. Whole foods provided bananas and Bruegger’s donated bagels for the all-important carb replacement process. It was a hot day so the runners were grateful for the water donated by Donelan’s, Whole Foods and Omni Supermarkets. Of course, the guys from Blue Ribbon Bar-B-Q were kept busy doling out hot dogs and fruit salads to hungry participants.
For a second year in a row, the Strivers Running Club for Girls won in the team category. This group of impressive middle school aged girls and their parents work together to train for 5K’s and raise money to support charitably causes. This year they presented Lovelane Executive Director, Debby Sabin, with a check for over $2,000 to support the program.
Finally, many runners generously created online first giving pages to raise funds for Lovelane. The top fundraising team honors goes to Team Reese. Lovelane development assistant Britt Daugherty and runner Courtney Clemons teamed up with Lovelane student Reese Blumenthal. Together they raised over $12,000 for Lovelane this year. Great job!!
Mark your calendars for the 2014 Susan McDaniel Run for Lovelane on Sunday, June 8th!
